Eid ul Azha 2010 – Cattle Markets of Super Highway and Qasba/Manghopir

On a fine morning of 9th November 2010, me, Ikramullah Khan and Kashif Rasheed went to survey the cattle market located at Super Highway, Karachi. Some people say that its the largest livestock market in Asia but I am unable to find any reliable references so far. The market is no doubt a huge one, in fact it looks more like a tent city, very much organized, more than I thought and with shops offering all kind of necessary daily use items ranging from grocery to vegetables, fruits, cooked meals, breakfast, cold and hot drinks, etc. There’s a separate section of VIP tents with extra ordinary livestock where each distinct animal have a designated area with its name (like billo, rani, raja, mahtaab, mahrukh, etc) and a billboard containing all necessary information about it like its lineage, weight, height, place of origin, age, etc.

There are some tips for those who want to struck good deals: go early in the morning, as early as possible, like we went after fajir prayers and were able to negotiate a couple of good deals in the early hours. As Sun starts to rise above, market picks up the momentum and the prices started to plunge upwards. Don’t know why it happens but this is what we experienced, may be they offer good deals to start off their selling activity as sooner as possible. Secondly, survey market quickly because you’ll have to cover a lot of ground. We lost a deal we made early in the morning just because when we came back after surveying the market, the stock was sold to other customer. We could’ve saved it by giving the token amount of PKR 1k or 2k but we also don’t want to tie up ourselves or loose that token amount for nothing… we prefer to suffer :)

A head cap, sun glasses and a mask are a must, if you want to do the shopping peacefully. The wind was creating a lot of problem blowing dust and feed particles all around and some times making it difficult for you to view and breathe. Masks are available in the market as well. Hand gloves might also help for extra cautious ones.

We heard some rumors that fewer sellers have came to Karachi this season, because last season they suffer loss when they had to take back unsold animals with themselves. However there’s also a practice of the sellers that they didn’t bring all animals along with themselves at once, when they sold the first batch they bring another batch from interior.

The prices sellers were demanding were too high, probably they afford to wait for a jack pot at this point in time, but good sense will prevail once the time ran short. For a mediocre calf of two teeth weighing around 90 – 120 kgs they demand from PKR 40k – 55k. You’ll have to negotiate “heavily” to bring them down to PKR 30k – 40k. Animals from Punjab have higher tag price as appose to the Sindh ones.

After surveying the Super Highway market till 3:00 pm we left for the Qasba market, in fact there wasn’t any cattle/market in Qasba area, but an area close to that on Manghopir road. That was not a “market” as such but a congregation of 100 or more animals of 4 – 5 vendors in an open plot. We went their via a reference and were able to made a good deal. Details are as follows:

One male and one female calves
Teeth: Two
Weight: 90 – 100 kgs
Place of Origin: Bahawalpur, Punjab
Price: PKR 31k for each
Transport cost: 1,800 - Qasba > Up Morre (first drop) > Johar Morr (second drop)

In pictures: Femal Calf.
