Intellij IDEA 8 - The best IDE a developer can have

No IDE, be it open source or commercial, can compete with Intellij IDEA 8. Look at the feature list and you'll be lost ! I can bet, this is the most powerfull IDE out there. Look at the massive 1st class tool level support for Java, JSP, JSF, SQL/DB, UML, XML, XPath, XSLT, JavaScript, GWT, AJAX, Flex, Velocity, Freemarker, Ruby/JRuby, Rails, Groovy/Grail, HTML, CSS, CVS/SVN/VSS, Diff, Maven, Ant, Struts1/2, Spring (WebFlow, MVC, Dyna Modules), Hibernate/JPA, EJB, Seam, Web Services, REST, properties file, Swing, Java ME, JUnit, TestNG, Application Servers... look at the humongous list of Inspection List, (632 and counting !) and gauge the amount of work load this IDE takes off from you. Then there's a robust plugin ecosystem with more than 500 available plugins and new ones appearing nearly every week targeting every single technology, scripting language, framework, tools, servers and what not. All I wish now; May Intellij IDEA read this post of mine and out of respect send me a life time license of this IDE... btw I haven't sent any email or link to those guys :)

When the Moors ruled in Europe

The Wall Street Journal
"The drama seems infused, suddenly, with important complexity, with great questions of war, peace, civilian casualties

"Inspiring" -- The Observer (U.K.)

Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European history--the rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal. Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archaeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years.

This fascinating two-part documentary explodes old stereotypes and offers shocking new insights. You’ll discover the ingenious mathematics behind Granada’s dazzling Alhambra Palace, trace El Cid’s lineage to his Moorish roots, and learn how the Iberian population willingly converted to Islam in droves.

Through interviews with noted scholars, you’ll see how Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel the West out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance. What emerges is a richly detailed portrait of a sensuous, inquisitive, and remarkably progressive Islamic culture in Christian Europe.

#2 or #57 doesn't matter !

I receive an email in reply to my previous post:

One of the most highlighted news by several media entities reported the nomination of Mustafa Kamal as the World’s Second Best Mayor by the Foreign Policy Magazine.

Based on a quick investigation, it was revealed that this story was a misleading and was actually fabricated to be used as a propaganda tool by MQM. In fact, Karachi has been ranked at 57th out of 60 global cities by the Foreign Policy Magazine at their website.
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=4509&page=1

Please also note that Mustafa Kamal’s name was only mentioned as the “Mayor of City Ranked at 57? in the world and there was NO ranking of any Mayors by the the FP Magazine.

Dear Sir/Madam,

It has been reported in some media entities in Pakistan that Mustafa Kamal (Mayor of Karachi) has been 'Ranked' as # 2 in the best Mayors of the world by your organisation. Can you please verify this news item. Also what is the criteria for Ranking of Mayors ?

Thanks and Regards,
Admin PKPolitics

-----Reply from Foreign Policy Magazine-----

Dear Sir/Madam,

To clarify, the mayor's mention in our magazine was not a ranking. Although Kamal was mentioned in a sidebar called 'Mayors of the Moment' in the article, 'The 2008 Global Cities Index,' this mention was not meant as a ranking per se. Rather, we meant to highlight city executives doing innovative things against enormous odds. While we applaud Kamal's efforts, his mention in our magazine was only a small part of a larger article that ranked the world's most global cities (Karachi ranked #57).

I hope this explains your question. Please feel free to reach me with any concerns or comments.

Sincerely,

xxxx xxxxxxx

I don't care what ranking our mayors get world over because I know the two mayors I mentioned in that post are true leaders, they work hard, day in & day out to improve living conditions in the city we live. So, it doesn't matter if the number is 2 or 57, as far as Karachi is concern, they are #1.

Young Leaders - a source of inspiration

Syed Mustafa Kamal, Mayor of Karachi, ranked #2 among the top Mayors of the World. Hard working, honest and passionate. An inspirtaion for all of us.

Also do not forget, Naimatullah Khan, who was the best performing mayor back in 2005 and really set the stage for a positive competition. Credit to goes all who work hard to resolve people problems no matter which party they belong.

Confused about Islamic Banking's Shariah Compliance?

On August 20, 2008 a fatwa appeared in several local newspapers declaring the prevalent Islamic banking system as impermissible. It sowed seeds of confusion in the mind of common Muslims, because a number of prominent Scholars were the signatories of that fatwa including:

Maulana Salimullah Jan [NOTE: The news did a mistake in last name and wrote "Jan" instead of "Khan"] (President of Tanzeematul Madaris and Wafaqul Madaris), Mufti Abdul Hameed Deenpuri (Jamia-al-Aloom Islamia, Banori Town), Mufti Habibullah Sheikh (Jamia Islamia, Clifton), Mufti Rafiq Ahmed and Mufti Saif Alam (Banori Town), Mufti Abdullah (Khairul Madaris, Multan), Mufti Ghulam Qadir (Darul Aloom Haqqani, Akora Khattak), Mufti Ahmed Mumtaz (Jamia Khulafa-e-Rashdeen, Karachi), Mufti Zarwali Khan (Jamia Ahsan-al-Aloom), Mufti Ehteshamul Haq (Jamia Rasheedia, Turbat, Mekran), Maulana Saeed Ahmed Jalalpuri (Alami Majlis Khatam-e-Nabuwwat), Maulana Dr Manzoor Ahmed Mengal (Jamia Farooqia), Mufti Hamid Hassan (Darul Aloom, Kabirwala), Mufti Abdul Ghaffar (Jamia Ashrafia, Sukkur), Mufti Saaduddin (Jamia Ilmia, Lakki Marwat), Mufti Gul Hassan (Jamia Rehmia, Sarki Road, Quetta), Mufti Rozi Khan (Darul Afta Rahania, Quetta), Mufti Qazi Salimullah (Darul Huda, Khairpur), Nazir Ahmed Shah (Jamia Farooq-e-Azam, Faisalabad), Mufti Saeedullah (Jamia Arabia Naeemul Islam, Quetta), Mufti Samiullah (Jamia Farooqia).

Do note that Maulana Salimullah Khan saheb is a teacher of Mufti Taqi Usmani saheb, who is an expert in the fields of Islamic Jurisprudence, Economics, Hadith and Tasawwuf and has played a key part in the move toward interest free banking and the establishment of Islamic financial institutions. He is considered to be an authority on this subject.

On 4th of September, 2008 a reply from Shaikh Mohammad Makki Hijazi (Lecturer at Masjidul Haram), Allama Abdul Hafeez Makki (Central Ameer of International Khatam e Nabuwwat Movement IKNM) and other leaders of IKNM appears in the local newspapers.

Dar ul Uloom Karachi's reply

On September the 14th, 2008, Dar ul Uloom Karachi issued a fatwa which clarifies the situation. A scanned copy is given here for reference. Signed by following eminent scholars:

Mufti Taqi Usmani saheb
Mufti Afzal Ali Rabbani saheb
Mufti Abdurrauf Sakkharwi saheb
Mufti Mahmud Ashraf Usmani saheb
Mufti Muhammad Abdul Mannan saheb

Similarly, a rather detailed fatwa was issued by Dar ul Uloom Karachi on 19th September, 2008. A scanned copy of it can be viewed here.

I respect both groups of Ulema and my only intent here is to show both sides of the story. They rightly said "The truth is that a muslim should follow any aalim whose fatwa he trusts and sincerely believes that the aalim is capable of giving an authentic fatwa which is not based on ignorance or self interest".

I believe Mufti Taqi Usmani saheb is an expert on the subject and a learned scholar who had spent his whole life in researching that subject. And this is the reason why he has great following both locally and internationally. I praise and pray for Mufti Taqi Usmani saheb and his talented team.

Obsession The Movie: A tool to temper the American electorate OR Radical Zionist/New-Con's War Against Islam?

banner_sale A very thoughtful research into a recent free-distribution campaign of a DVD that has content surely targeted at tempering the American electorate in the upcoming US presidential elections. Its very interesting to note that the distribution was done chiefly in the "Swing Sates (Florida, Ohio, Michigan etc)". The writer is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A Must read.

Slippery Stone: An inquiry into Islam's stance on music

Slippery Stone: An inquiry into Islam's stance on music

"Contemporary, convincing, comprehensive..." — Mufti Zubair Bayat

"Academically superb... This book is a valuable addition to the English literature on the subject." Dr. Salman Nadvi

What does Islam say about poetry, singing, musical instruments, musicians, and the business of music?
What is the truth about the much-publicized “music controversy” in Islam?
What is the verdict on nashids?
What did the Sufi masters say about sama?
What is the truth about Ibn Hazm's arguments on the subject?

This book demystifies the issue of music in Islam by going to original source books in Arabic, many of them brought to light for the first time in the English language.

It traces the attitudes of the Muslim society about music and the musician throughout its history and quotes extensively from the deliberations of the Qur’an and Hadith scholars and jurists from all schools of Islamic Law, both Sunni and Shi'ah.

More than six hundred references and more than a hundred twenty biographical notes on the authorities quoted add to the value of a discussion that is comprehensive without being boring, and detailed without being confusing.

Campaign for Afia: A mockery of Justice

Aitzaz Ahsan, President SCBA, during his recent visit to New York and President Zardari, soon after in Islamabad, have made statements to the effect that Dr Aafia's case is more a test of the "American Justice" rather than a test of justice to Dr Aafia alone.
The questions arise as to: Whether this is the first test of US justice or the US justice has already been tried several times with extremely negative results? read more here...

All that money you've lost — where did it go?

Trillions in stock market value — gone. Trillions in retirement savings — gone. A huge chunk of the money you paid for your house, the money you're saving for college, the money your boss needs to make payroll — gone, gone, gone.

Whether you're a stock broker or Joe Six-pack, if you have a 401(k), a mutual fund or a college savings plan, tumbling stock markets and sagging home prices mean you've lost a whole lot of the money that was right there on your account statements just a few months ago.

But if you no longer have that money, who does? The fat cats on Wall Street? Some oil baron in Saudi Arabia? The government of China?

Or is it just — gone? read more here...

A peaceful protest was held in Parade Ground, Islamabad on 7th august 2008 in support of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. Her sister, Dr. Fozia also addressed the rally and I think that no body there in the ground could stop his/her tears while listening to her. Please campaign for Dr Afia as much as you can.
